Why I Sing: Megan Leese
Soprano II
I'm a relatively new member of the New York Choral Society, but in my first year, within weeks of joining the chorus, attending rehearsals became the highlight of my week. It is now without doubt one of the activities I can't live without.
I sang in choirs all through middle school, high school, and college – music was always a large part of my life. When I moved from Texas to New York immediately following school, at age 21, I quickly fell in with an alt-country band. Aside from my day job in health care administration, I performed at weddings and country club parties, as well as at a number of bars ranging from pubs to dives. I love singing pop, folk, country, and classic rock, but after several years I found myself longing for choral music again. I wanted to stretch back into my Soprano II range, sight-read, and know the camaraderie of a choir.
Google led me to the NYCS, and some asking around convinced me that it was a quality group. I was pleased to get in, and then thrilled following my first rehearsal. I was so proud to be part of such an excellent chorus, and all the people were so nice! My enthusiasm has only increased over the years. I've made a bunch of lovely friends, and I grow more proud after every performance. I was also fortunate to be chosen for the Chamber Singers, an extra outlet for my choral singing needs.
As new parents, my husband and I want our son to grow up knowing beautiful works of music. I hope this chorus, which is such an important part of my life, will instill music appreciation in him and in all listeners! I think every choral singer and music lover should know the fun, music, and friendship that NYCS offers.
